The Catholic Church in Bulgaria uses two types of service: latin (two dioceses: Sofia-Plovdiv and Rousse-Nikopol) and eastern (exarchate covering all the country with center Sofia).
The bishops of the three eparchies are united in Episcopal Conference, which Chairman is Bishop Hristo Proikov, Apostolical Exarch.

The Catholic Church has its structures in Bulgaria since 1565. Bulgarian catholics, led by Bishop Petar Parchevitch made the Chiprovtzi Uprising in 1688, which is the first organized revolt against the Otaman domination.
In 1761 the Franciscan monk Blasius Kleiner wrote the first Bulgarian history.

Catholic Church with eastern type of service was made in 1860.
The Catholic Church in Bulgaria became stronger in spirituality and organisation during the 20-ies and 30-ies, supported by the Apostolical Delegate Angelo Roncalli (later Pope John XXIII) .

The Catholic Church was put to persecution by the communist authorities during the time of totalitarianism, when many bishops and priests were put to death, others spent many years in camps and prisons. Hospitals and schools were closed. The properties of the Catholic Church were confiscated.

In 1998 for his death of a martyr (1952) Bishop Evgeni Bosilkov was declared as the First Bulgarian Blessed.
